What is PLA? Polylactic acid (PLA) filament is a thermoplastic polyester made from renewable resources like corn starch or sugarcane. It's a common material used in 3D printing.

Properties:

  • Biodegradable: PLA can be broken down in composting plants or under certain conditions with high heat
  • Recyclable: PLA can be melted and reused without significant damage
  • Non-toxic: PLA doesn't emit toxins or fumes when melted
  • Low shrinkage: PLA doesn't deform after cooling, making it ideal for 3D printing
  • Low melting point: PLA has a melting point between 80 and 150 °C (176 - 302°F)
  • Good layer adhesion: PLA has excellent layer adhesion, making it good for creating intricate designs

Uses:

  • 3D printing: PLA is a popular choice for 3D printing because of its low melting point, minimal warping, and excellent layer adhesion
  • Rapid prototyping: PLA is ideal for fast prototyping because it's easy to print with
  • Artistic designs: PLA is good for creating intricate artistic designs because of its print quality and dimensional accuracy

Production:

  • PLA is made by breaking down the starch in plants like corn or beets into lactic acid
  • PLA is the second most produced bioplastic
